Carrick masters Open water Safari swims-register now
Swim 1. 19th June Newlyn to Mousehole
Route: Newlyn Tolcarne Beach to Mousehole Harbour. You'll be supported from the water by a team of kayakers who are experienced in swim support. The swim will leave from close to Newlyn harbour wall and follows the rocky shoreline to Mousehole. If the visibility is good, the underwater scenery, rocks and seaweed are great. We'll pass the iconic Penlee lifeboat station, now a memorial to the crew of the lifeboat who were lost in the Union Star tragedy.
Swim 2. 3rd July Round the Mount
Route: Marazion Beach round St. Michaels Mount and back. The swim leaves the beach at high water and you'll cross to the Mount, then stay close to the rocky shore round island. It's a very scenic swim both above and below the water. The direction of travel will be decided on the day subject to wind and swell conditions. You'll be supported from the water by a team of kayakers who are experienced in swim support. This is a circular swim, so we will finish where we started.
Max Swimmers 20 Wetsuits: Compulsary unless you are an experienced/regular skins swimmer comfortable with at least 1 hr. in the water at this time of year. Please discuss with Cathy first if you want to swim skins.

SE SW regional Championships 30th April - 2nd May 2022
Mon, 16 May 2022 17:31:40 +0100
Three of Carrick masters younger members (under 24 years) successfully qualified for the SE SW Regional Championships held at Plymouth Life Centre Long Course pool over the May Bank Holiday weekend.
Carrick masters has supported Aiden, Jodie and Mikey in their return to the “Age group” competitive arena. Qualifying times for this Regional event are tough, have to be recorded on the SE age group rankings and must be achieved at a licensed gala in the last 6 months. All 3 swimmers embraced the challenge, achieved qualifying times and were eligible to compete in at least one event.
Aiden swum in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle races getting a bronze medal in the 50m free and silver in the 200m freestyle para category. All Aiden’s times were season best times and he continues to work steadily towards his lifetime best times, some of which were recorded from as long ago as 2017.
Jodie swum the 50m breast stroke. With improvements in her dive and stroke technique she swum over a second faster than her lifetime best time set in 2016. This was an amazing achievement!
Mikey qualified for the 50m free, 50m breast stroke and 50m fly. All his sprint races were technically well swum and he achieved lifetime (or within 0.04 secs of lifetime) PBs in all 3 events. Every 0.01 second counts on these sprints!
Congratulations to these young athletes who are now eligible to enter the SE SW Region Fast 5 competition on June 26th at Millfield School .
Carrick masters aims to support all its members to enjoy a lifelong participation in the sport of swimming and it was a pleasure to watch Aiden, Jodie and Mikey perform to such a high standard at a top level event. Wave of Change - World Record Breaking Attempt Starts
Tue, 29 Jun 2021 12:38:37 +0100
Track Neil’s swim here: http://yb.tl/waveofchange21
From Neil’s Facebook page:
The next update comes sooner than expected. This is part of the excitement and nature of these kinds of expeditions.
After carefully considering the options, I made the tough but necessary decision to change the course of the swim. The route is now that of Linosa (a Small Mediterranean island near Africa) to Malta. I will be swimming home.
The swim is still an attempt to break the current World Record of the “The longest continuous, unassisted, current neutral swim along a single-segment natural route in an ocean, sea, or bay” or in simple terms the ‘Longest Open Water Swim’ - currently held at 124.4km. This doesn't make the swim any easier or less of a challenge. All the exact same restrictions apply. It is still set to be a 50-55 hour non stop swim.
I will start swimming on Monday at 5pm.
As you can imagine, this takes mental agility from myself and the team to switch course at such short notice. But this is all part of the training and the mindset I am committed to.
The excitement ramps up another notch!

Wave of Change - World Record Breaking Attempt
Fri, 11 Jun 2021 13:02:00 +0100
One of our new members, Angie, is supporting a swim between 2 continents which hopes to break the world record as the longest ocean swim:
I will be supporting Neil Agius a 34 year old swimmer from Malta. He co-funded an NGO to raise awareness on a number of issues including plastic in our oceans. Below please find a link to the website:
(Image from Wave of Change website)
He was my training partner and we both represented Malta at the Athens Olympics in 2004. He is currently attempting to smash the World Record to swim the longest open water swim ever attempted:
He’ll be crossing two continents, from Africa to Europe. His message is that we all share oceans and litter discarded in Europe will end up in Africa and vice versa, so all have to take responsibility for our oceans.
I will be volunteering as a medic for the swim and I will also be an observer for Marathon Swimming Federation (MSF) a platform that ratifies independent open-water marathon swims.
Some interesting facts:
- The distance is 153km.
- The predicted swim time is 50 hours.
- He is not allowed to touch the support boat.
- He will be swimming without a wetsuit.
- The date will be between 25th June - 8th July - depending on the weather.
- Staying awake for 2 nights.
- Strong unpredictable winds and currents in the Mediterranean.
- Shark attacks.
Specific medical risks:
- Hypo and hyperthermia - hypo and hypernatremia (dehydration and over hydration).
- His tongue will absorb so much water that he will lose his ability to feel thirst. This will make it particularly difficult to ensure he is drinking the right amount of water and electrolytes).
- Anaphylaxis from jellyfish stings. We anticipate several jelly fish stings per hour. There is some concern that these may result in a cumulative allergic reaction.
- Large fish bite resulting in bleeding/fractures.
- Drowing - delayed drowning.
We hope to be able to follow his swim directly on the website, and will share the link when available.
Good luck to Neil, Angie and the rest of the Wave of Change record attempt team! 🏊 🚤 👏
